Mitch & Debbie Martinez have been hosting short-term missions for more than 14 years. Besides living and ministering in the host country of the Dominican Republic during this period, they are also both bilingual and serve as translators for the teams. They have worked with the following missions: Your Missionary Outreach, Worldteam, The Missionary Church Intl., and Assemblies of God World Missions. They both have their Master of Arts from Columbia International University (Bible and Education majors), and BAs in Missions from Southeastern College, Lakeland, FL. |
Short Term Missions and the Future | ||
| IT WAS eighteen years ago that we first became involved in a short-term missions trip. We had been asked to go as interpreters for a team to the Dominican Republic. We had no idea that within 10 months we would be moving there with our family to work with teams and nationals in varied missions tasks. Our concept of what short-term missions teams could do was greatly impacted by our experiences in the Dominican Republic. We hosted evangelistic teams that came and ministered in area churches or outdoor preaching points. We also found ourselves hosting adult medical teams doing clinics for the poor, and construction teams building churches, schools, clinics, and providing housing. |
Then there were the many youth groups that came and ministered in varied ways, such as dramas, puppets, construction, preaching, testimonies, and videos. Fourteen years later we can look back and see the impact of short term teams as I count 20 churches, a school building, and a medical clinic have been built. | Seven churches have been planted with the help of ministry teams. Our organization networked with Mennonites, Presbyterians, Assemblies of God, Methodists, Nazarenes, Church of God, and others to accomplish these tasks. Our excitement right now is thinking about what the future will hold as your team prepares to make an impact on the mission field! |
